Upper Mustang Trek

Trip Overview

Adventures in Nepal:

When it comes to Nepal, one word says it all: “The Himalaya”. For this magical kingdom sits high on the spine of the world’s most famous mountain range. Nerve-tingling scenery, a complex culture and some of the best walking trails in the world make Nepal a mecca for the adventure traveller. Here you can trek to the top of the world, raft down raging rapids, walk awesome mountain passes or simply contemplate the meaning of life as you listen to monks chanting.

Life in Nepal adds new meaning to living on the edge, a delicate balance of high altitude, hard work and social festivities, all steeped heavily in ancient tradition. And although poor, Nepal’s culture is rich. It’s not hard to see why this is a heaven for Buddhism, and you’ll come across monasteries, village temples, and prayer flags atop passes and houses wherever you go. The people leave an indelible impression too.

In order to help the Nepalese, we organize the Upper Mustang Trek. We prefer to transport our luggage on donkeys, horses or a jeep. If possible we like to avoid to exploit people like porters or Sherpa’s to carry our luggage. The maximum load per person is 25 kilograms, hand luggage excluded. In this way we can carry heavier camera equipment to witness our journey. This might be more expensive than using porters.

  • Day 04: Fly from Pokhara  to Jomsom and trek to Marpha,

We'll head to the airport early this morning for our spectacular mountain flight to Jomsom (2,720m) - the district headquarters of Mustang. Once on the ground, we will meet up our trekking crew and then trek up other side of the Kali Gandaki valley to Marpha, where we'll stay tonight.

Leaving Jomsom we trek through the village of Thini. From here it is about half an hour to Dumba Lake. This very small lake is considered holy by the local Thakali people. A short climb brings us to Dumba Gompa for magnificent views of the Kali Gandaki Valley, Dhaulagiri and Tukuche Peak. From the Gompa we have 2 trails– the shorter one descends down through Dumba village to the suspension bridge across the Kali Gandaki to Marpha. Another longer trail continues on the same side of the river towards the Tibetan refugee camp of Chairo. A bridge crossing the Kali Gandaki takes us to the pretty village of Marpha (2,690m) with its clean paved streets and white-washed houses. Marpha is famous for its locally-made apple and peach brandy, which we might like to sample in the region.

    Trekking time: 4- 5 hours

Overnight Tea house, Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner

  • Day 05: Marpha to Kagbeni,

After breakfast today, we begin our trek following Kali Gandaki valley on the left to Jomsom, where we might have lunch break. We can explore the town a bit and then continue trek up the windy Kali Gandaki valley to Kagbeni (2,847m), where we stay tonight. The wide trail along the sandy, saligram-filled riverbed provides views of the surrounding peaks of Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, and Nilgiri, and to the south, the entire Annapurna Massif. The walk is just a few hours to Kagbeni this afternoon. We will also be back here on our way home again, but will probably just want to relax then!
Kagbeni, spectacularly situated atop a cliff overlooking the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and the Jhong Khola rivers, is the last village in Lower Mustang and guards the entrance into Upper Mustang, visible across the Kali Gandaki riverbed. It is an oasis of green fields in the midst of rocky, arid mountains, with Niligiri looming grandly behind it. This ancient, partially ruined citadel town provides a taste of scenes to come in upper Mustang, with its narrow alleyways and tunnels, irrigation canals, green fields of barley and its massive, newly-restored 800-year-old brick-red Sakya Gompa. We can also wander past the ancient, crumbling 100-room King’s Palace.
At the police check post at the north end of the village is a sign reads "Restricted area, tourists please do not go beyond this point;" there we will complete our paperwork to enter Upper Mustang tomorrow.

    Trekking time: 5- 6 hours

Overnight Tea house, Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner

  • Day 06: Kagbeni to Chele,

We get our permits checked then begin our trek on a trail alongside the Kali Gandaki River. We walk on sand amidst strong winds before ascending on a hill. We reach the Tangbe Village and admire its narrow alleyways, white-washed houses, barley and buckwheat fields, and apple orchards. We continue our walk and pass another village and cross a river on our way. Next, we will walk on a ridge before reaching Chele Village (3,050m).

    Trekking time: 5- 6 hours

Overnight Tea house, Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
